Out of the Woods is about a beautiful love story I observed unfolding between two friends of mine. Set in the woods the two friends find love and healing in each other as each helps the other "out of the woods" to heal from the ghosts in their past. The piece shows two brightly colored birds which represent my two friends. The colors reflect the aura of color I experienced around each of them. The purple bird in the lower part of the picture seems to be actively helping the copper colored bird escape from under the cut log.
The scene taking place in the piece is deeply significant as both of my friends had experienced a violent loss of a close loved one through very tragic circumstances. One had lost her husband in a logging accident a decade or more before and the other had lost her mother to suicide. Both of these lost loves are shown still present here in the images of two ghost like blue birds. The tragically killed husband is depicted as the ghost like bird in the center of the piece and is clearly still intertwined with the copper colored bird who looks determined to break free and yet finds herself struggling to be aligned and fully present with her new love. Her new love seems to be very aware of her partner's struggle and with a gentle warrior-like strength seems to respond instinctively anchoring the scene from beneath in a concerned yet loving patience. Her personal loss - her mother is represented in the smaller bird whose eyes are closed in the bottom left of the scene. Her mother also remains present yet it is clear there is a certain level of closure and healing we sense has already taken place and things between them are more laid to rest.
An important element is the facia like celtic threads that run across the entire piece. There is a distinct difference in moving from left to right in the scene. You can see the scene is still unfolding from the intensity of being held captive by the past and yet we see the outcome of the future unfolding with the colors turning to green and awakenings (depicted in a series of yellow dots) lining up to the right signalling the potential of the future once each can better integrate their past. While there is a clear struggle moving through the piece there is also a feeling they will triumph in this struggle and move out of the woods with love and into a brighter future together.
